Bibiano Fernandes Calls Time on MMA Career, Commits to Jiu-Jitsu Future

18 February 2025

After an illustrious career spanning over two decades, former Bibiano Fernandes has announced his retirement from professional mixed martial arts. The Brazilian legend, who reigned as the ONE Championship bantamweight champion on two separate occasions, leaves behind an impressive legacy with a professional record of 24-6.

While Fernandes will no longer step into the cage after his final bout at ONE 171 on February 20, 2025, against rival Kevin Belingon, he has no intention of stopping his competitive journey entirely. Instead, the 45-year-old has reaffirmed his passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, stating he will continue competing in the sport he first fell in love with.

“Jiu-Jitsu is my love,” Fernandes told Canadian news outlet CBC in a recent interview. “It is something I like because I enjoy challenging myself. People want to see if I’m still sharp, still good, and I want to show them I am still in the game.”

Fernandes originally made his name in the grappling world, capturing multiple IBJJF World Championships before transitioning to MMA. Even after dominating in the cage, he returned to Jiu-Jitsu last year, competing and winning gold in the masters division.

As for why he chose to retire from MMA now, Fernandes cited his growing commitments outside the cage, particularly his new role as a coach and mentor.

“Right now, I have my own school and a lot of students to look after,” Fernandes explained. “Mixed martial arts will be the past. But Jiu-Jitsu? That’s my future. I’ll keep going until I’m 80, no problem.”

Although Fernandes will no longer fight in MMA, he still sees himself playing a role in the sport’s future. He hopes to pass down his knowledge to the next generation of fighters.

“I dedicated my life to mixed martial arts for 22 years,” Fernandes said. “I want young guys to know that if they train hard, stay disciplined, and believe in themselves, they can travel the world and achieve great things in this sport.”
