Sadibou Sy, the 2022 PFL Welterweight Champion, is ready to make his mark in the newly revived middleweight division. Standing at 6’3”, Sy has competed across multiple weight classes but now believes he’s found the ideal home at 185 pounds.
Originally joining the PFL as a middleweight in 2018, Sy dropped to welterweight when the division was removed. Despite capturing gold at 170 pounds, he admitted the weight cut was brutal. After briefly competing at light heavyweight in 2023, Sy is excited to return to a division where he feels at his best.
“Middleweight is the perfect balance for me,” Sy told Cageside Press. “I never should’ve been at welterweight, but at the time, there was no choice. I tried 205, but putting on the extra weight wasn’t easy. This feels right.”
Sy recently traveled to Colombia for specialized cryotherapy treatments, something he believes will enhance his longevity in the sport. “I hate the cold,” he laughed. “But if it helps my body, I’ll do it. After my treatments, I feel amazing—bad news for the rest of the division.”
With the PFL merging talent from Bellator, Sy knows the competition will be tougher than ever. Fighters like Dalton Rosta, Fabian Edwards, and Aaron Jeffery are entering the tournament, making the road to the title even more challenging.
“At this level, everyone is good,” Sy stated. “The key is constant improvement. I don’t dwell on matchups—I stay focused and take on whoever’s in front of me.”
Training at Xtreme Couture, Sy works alongside elite fighters, including former UFC champion Sean Strickland. Addressing recent controversy between Strickland and his coach Eric Nicksick, Sy remained diplomatic.
“Sean’s a great fighter, and he’ll bounce back. Eric was just trying to motivate him. They’re both professionals, and things have been sorted.”
With a fresh mindset and a new division to conquer, Sy is poised to make a serious run for another PFL championship in 2025.
